Explore Your Lore
Have you ever wanted to be a part of a fairy tale? Ever wanted to see yourself in an old legend or weaved throughout a myth?
Well that’s exactly what we are going to do in this four-week online group art therapy workshop.
As a part of a group, you will creatively craft a tale of your own through art making and story telling. In this workshop you will be prompted to explore your own personal lore by using myth-making, visual imagery, and narrative therapy elements.
Together, we will learn about how symbolism can be used by incorporating animals, plants, and archetype in a creative way to bring depth and story crafting to your own personal narrative.
Each week you will be guided through a new layer of story-building, given time to make art in real time with the group, and then share and witness our collective lore.
FAQs
When will the group run?
The group will run on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 - 4:00 Pacific Time.
The dates are January 19th, 26th, February 9, & 16. The break on February 2nd is intentional! This will give participants a chance to either take a week off or spend some time on their own adding to their story or exploring the journal prompts that will be included.
Registration is open NOW and will close January 2nd. This will leave enough time for Sarah to post your package of materials in the mail.
If you sign up but then realize you can’t attend, you will need to let Sarah know before December 24th in order to get a refund. Due to the holidays as well as the time needed to let people on the cancellation list know that there is an open spot, if you withdraw after December 24th there simply won’t be time to fill your spot so you will still be charged for the group.
Who can join?
You! This group is for anyone who is able to be in a group setting online and is interested in digging into the subject material we will be exploring. Whether you are a current client of Sarah’s or a newcomer, you are welcome to join! Since this group is being held online, anyone across Canada can attend - yay! Just double check the time difference, Sarah is local to the Vancouver, BC area, so the run time for this group is set in Pacific Time.
This group might not be a good fit for you if you are hoping to dive into trauma reprocessing or if you have a hard time self-containing or self-regulating. We won’t directly be sharing our trauma histories, but obviously we might touch on some heavy themes as we craft and build our lore (all good fairytales have a villain…), but this isn’t a trauma-focused group workshop.
If you’re not sure about what this means, feel free to reach out to Sarah via email.
How do I register?
There is a link above these FAQs! You can also just email Sarah to sign up. Since Sarah is not as tech savvy as she’d like to be, you will email her and let her know you want to sign up, she’ll book you in for the four group sessions and then you’ll go through the paperwork to formally register.
If you don’t already have a JaneApp profile with Newland Art Therapy you will be prompted to create one. You will have to enter credit card info in order to register, as this is an online group and payment will be done electronically (more details on that below). A group consent form will be sent out to you in a day or two upon registering, and it is required that you complete the group consent form before the start of our first group session. Consent is essential, babes, even for art groups!
You’ll get sent a Zoom link the week before our first group session.
How much does it cost?
The cost for the full workshop is $250 +GST. This works out to $62.50 +GST per two hour session (kind of steal, tbh).
The payment for this group will happen on a weekly basis on the day/time of the group. Sarah set it up this way to make it a little more accessible for people, since dropping $250 at this time of the year might be a significant barrier for a lot of folks. Your card will be charged each week a session is held whether you attend that week or not, as attendance of all four sessions is highly encouraged. If you would rather pay in one lump sum, let Sarah know and she will make that happen.
What’s included?
Aside from the 2-hour online group sessions, a small package of materials will be sent out to you along with some journal prompts for between-session exploration. This little package will be stocked with a variety of styles, images, papers, and materials to inspire you. Every package will have the same elements with slightly different variations, kind of like a choose your own adventure type of material package! You can use some, all, or none of what Sarah sends you as the art you make will be fully up to you.
You will be sent (via mail through Canada Post):
a small blank sketchbook
collage materials
specially selected stickers and ephemera
If you want to see an example of what is being sent, check out Sarah’s instagram page (@newlandarttherapy) to see a little reel of what a package looks like!
What else will I need?
An internet connection and a willingness to connect with others online!
You will need a private space to attend these sessions, so if you plan on being in a public or shared space for these workshops, that won’t work. Out of respect for other participants as well as to maintain proper group containment, you will need to be alone in the space you are attending from. This means ideally a room with a closed door with no other person in the room with you.
It will also be useful for you to have access to some basic art materials, like:
coloured pencils, paints, crayons, pastels, pens, felts, etc (this is an and/or situation - you don’t need all of these, one or some will do just fine!)
scissors
glue stick (or other glue)
a pen to write with
scrap paper
anything else your heart desires (I’m a big fan of natural materials, like dried leaves, feathers, etc)
